Reflection & Intentionality - Beyond the Logistics
As we approach the end of year, amidst the craziness there is value in reflection. We look at what we've achieved, how the kids have fared at school, where we travelled. Another meaningful question is: How have we grown in relationship with each other?
Think back over the past twelve months. Within all the school terms, business meetings and social occasions, there were moments—perhaps more than you realise—where genuine connection happened. The families that thrive across generations invest in the quality of their relationships with the same intentionality they bring to everything else. Building connection and family unity conversation by conversation, whether standing around the kitchen island, laughing at the dinner table or chatting while stuck in traffic.
Intentionality is the thread that weaves through it all. It's the choice to pause and notice what's working well, to celebrate moments of genuine connection, to acknowledge how your family has grown in its ability to navigate decisions together, and to identify those ‘traditions’ or practices that have genuinely brought you closer.
As we move towards the holiday season and into 2026, consider how you might bring this same intentionality to the moments that matter most—choosing not just what you'll achieve individually and collectively, but how you'll be together.

Rocketfuel For Life: Developing Your Children's Essential Capabilities
Carrying on the theme of intentionality, here's a question we often consider in the broader family leadership space: "How's the kids' rocketfuel development going?" Those extraordinary skills that help them navigate the complexities of life, decision-making and life choices.
These are the skills beyond academic achievement and extracurricular excellence that don't just happen by osmosis—they too take skill, guidance and practice, yet somehow we often assume these practical life skills will simply... happen.
Take a moment to consider each of your children. Beyond their school reports, where are they in developing the capabilities they'll need as adults? Preparing a meal, navigating conflict (especially those 'life is not fair' lessons), being able to advocate for themselves, solve problems independently or understanding the value of a dollar. As adults, we know sometimes there is no clear "right" answer.
The challenge for many parents is knowing when to step back. Our role must evolve as the kids develop and embrace new chapters of their lives—from doing everything for them in early childhood, to teaching and coaching in the middle years, to advising and mentoring as the issues they face evolve.
Equipping our kids with life's rocket fuel is an essential component of family leadership—one that sits at the heart of thoughtful family governance. Because governance, or intentionality, is applicable to so much more than just the business and financial wealth arenas. It's about preparing the next generation to work together, to steward what matters, and to thrive as both individuals and as a family team.
The goal isn't to push them towards independence before they're ready, but to thoughtfully scaffold their journey with the same intentionality you bring to other aspects of family life—preparing them to become capable, confident adults who can navigate life's complexities with resilience, wisdom and a strength in making sound decisions together.
As you look towards 2026: What 2-3 specific life skills would be valuable for each child to develop this coming year? How will you create genuine opportunities for them to learn—including the space to make mistakes? And where might you need to adjust your approach, recognising that our reflexive helpfulness can sometimes become the biggest barrier to their development?
If you'd like to explore how your family is tracking in building these essential capabilities—both individually and as a family team—let’s have a conversation. Often times an outside perspective can help identify the rocketfuel skills that deserve focus in the year ahead.

Heritage to Horizon Podcast
As many of you know, this year’s circumstances required total focus on my family so the Heritage to Horizon podcast took a pause -sometimes life reminds us that being present for what matters most is the right call to make.
We'll be back in 2026 with fresh conversations exploring family governance, leadership development, and what it truly means to build lasting family legacy—in all its dimensions. In the meantime, you can catch up on previous episodes covering everything from intentional planning to decision-making frameworks that help families thrive across generations.
I've also had the pleasure of exploring various family governance topics in conversation with Mark Branicevich—you can find those discussions on Mark's YouTube channel.

As 2025 draws to a close, the holiday season has a beautiful way of inviting us to pause—to gather with loved ones, to laugh together, to create the memories that will be recounted for years to come. In the midst of the festivities and celebrations, there's an opportunity to truly see the people around us and to be fully present with them.
This year has reminded me again that presence is the greatest gift we can offer. Not perfection, not problem-solving, not even productivity—just being fully there. Noticing the small moments. Sharing the laughter. Saying the things that matter. Being gentle with ourselves and each other when things don't go to plan.
The conversations over breakfast, the shared jokes that only your family understands, the comfortable silences, the traditions that bring you together year after year—these are the threads that weave the fabric of family life. These are the moments worth being intentional about.
As you unwind & relax, after the craziness of the holiday season and all they year has held, I encourage you to genuinely connect—to put down the devices, to laugh together, to create new memories alongside the cherished old ones. Tell the people you love why they're important to you. Be specific. Don't assume they know.
My wish for you is precious time with those you love, genuine moments of connection and joy, and the kind of rest that truly restores. May you carry forward into 2026 not just plans and goals, but a renewed commitment to the relationships that make everything else worthwhile.
